Abstract

|
Purpose: This study was aimed to summarize and review the evidence from examining the difference of diet-related infection in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
Method: Six analytic studies and six descriptive studies were identified, reviewed for substantive results.
Result: Most studied suggested that diet-related infection in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation was not different between restricted diets and normal hospital diets. Although food may contain harmful organisms and researches have shown that bacterial translocation is possible, recent studies have been unable to obtain significant differences between restricted diets and normal hospital diets.
Conclusion: The restricted diets should change from a sterile diet prepared under laminar-flow hoods to a more liberal diets that avoid high-risk foods and emphasize safety in food handling practices. Since many studies had serious methodological limitations, it would be necessary to identify diet-related infection for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation patients.
